What is Functional / Integrative Medicine?
In ancient Greece, doctors worked under the patronage of Asklepios, the god of medicine, but healers served Asklepio's daughter, the radiant Hygeia, goddess of health. Medical writer and philosopher Ren Dubos has written:
For the worshippers of Hygeia, health is the natural order of things, a positive attribute to which you are entitled if you govern your life wisely. According to them, the most important function of medicine is to discover and teach the natural laws which will ensure you a healthy mind in a healthy body. More skeptical, or wiser in the ways of the world, the followers of Asklepios believed that the chief role of the physician is to treat disease, to restore health by correcting any imperfections caused by accidents of birth or life. It is the beginning of the new millennium and our medical technology is continually advancing, but at what cost? Physically and Financially! Practitioners of Functional Medicine believe . . .
The individual - not the illness - is the target of treatment. YOUR illness is a manifestation of the breakdown of YOUR body's mechanisms that control the quality of YOUR health. From the Functional Medicine perspective, patient care presumes that YOU are a unique individual. This healthcare approach focuses attention on biochemical individuality, metabolic balance, environmental factors, and personal lifestyle as they affect the dynamics of YOUR health. This approach to diagnosis emphasizes the functional cause of illness. Treatment is then individually tailored to improve function and RESTORE YOUR HEALTH.
